The average household in the UK uses around 1 kilowatt of energy each hour and generates around a tonne of waste every year. Working with industry, the UK is looking for ways to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and landfills.

The East London Sustainable Energy Facility will address the area’s energy generation and waste disposal issues by converting household waste into green energy. Waste thrown away by East London residents contains valuable energy, a proportion of which is renewable. Even after recycling, composting and further treatment, energy can be safely recovered from this waste.

Biossence has been granted planning permission to develop a new Sustainable Energy Facility in Havering. The facility will use a thermal treatment called gasification to convert the waste left after recycling to enough energy to power about 10,000 homes a year.
